Machete on Bass
Spain
Приєднався 12 бер 2007
Mike 'Machete' Synnott covers famous bass lines, and discusses bassists, instruments, gear, technique and why he rarely uses the little finger on his fretting hand.
FGTH - Welcome to the Pleasuredome
Grab a cup of coffee and strap in; this one is over 13 minutes long! This is the full album version of the song Welcome to the Pleasuredome. Talk about a labour of love! I used almost every bass technique I know to try and emulate the sound of Trevor Horn's production on this; fingerstyle, slap, string skipping, left hand damping, right hand damping, left hand muting, playing on the fretwire, and fingernail picking. The only effect on the bass is a little Analog Chorus on my Helix. There is absolutely no post-production on the bass. I've been looking for a multitrack backing track of this song for years and Karaoke Version recently obliged. Another thing ticked off my bucket list. I hope I did it justice.

A tribute to Rutger Gunnarsson, the genius behind ABBA's incredible basslines and many of their string arrangements.

You can't do a series of Queen covers and not do this one. Bohemian Rhapsody. Does it get any better than this for rock opera pomp and musicality?

A close friend asked me to do some Queen videos, so this is the second one in as many days. Crazy Little Thing Called Love; bass cover.

My bass cover of Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now". This is the first bass cover I've made in two years, and the first I've made since moving to Spain.

I can still remember the first time I heard the album 'Welcome to the Pleasuredome'. I was browsing in Golden Discs in Dun Laoghaire shortly before Christmas in 1984 and the guy behind the counter put it on. I continued to browse as the 'The World is my Oyster' intro played, and didn't pay much attention. But when the title track kicked in properly, 3 minutes and 20 seconds into the album, with...

Loads to say about this: 1. I had a massive brain fart when I was setting up my phone to record the video. I put it on the stand in portrait orientation rather than landscape, so we're stuck with a silly portrait video. Sorry guys. Mind you, if you're watching on a phone (hope you're using headphones!) it'll probably look better. It only hit me halfway through the recording that something was w...

Ready an' Willing was one of the first albums I bought on vinyl in my mid teens and Fool For Your Loving was a standout track for me; not least because of Neil Murray's fluid and melodic bass playing. (I've not even attempted to reproduce his line note for note on this.) I'd done so many covers of 80s pop tunes recently that I felt the need to go back to my rock roots and do something with a bi...

I've always loved this song since I first heard the album Popped In, Souled Out in the 80s. From roughly '87 to '89, I had a software business with two friends, Paul McGrath and Jimmy Kavanagh, in Ashford, Co Wicklow. Jimmy and I used to listen to a bewildering variety of music in the office, and sometimes our tastes diverged but on the question of Wet Wet Wet and the Popped in, Souled Out albu...

Socially distant cover. We're not a band; just a few blokes who love this song. Chris Stynes - Drums Dermot Roche - Guitars. (Lots of guitars! 12 tracks of them!) Mike Synnott - Bass, Vocals, Keys, Production.

You guys did a very great job on my very own personal theme song. Bravo!
Nice Mick..great track..classic. Nailed. Shane C
Cheers Shano!
So good! Wished I could play Dancing Queen like you can ...
Nice.
Thank you, man. I was 14 when they were on top although ridiculed as "cheesy musicians" . I always remained faithful to this day, though, meanwhile it turned out they were geniuses. Greetings from Poland.
Parabéns, ficou perfeito idêntico ao original! Abraço do Brasil 🇧🇷
Excellent Mike, you nailed it.
Skinny, my man, thanks a million! I'd forgotten how addictive doing these bass videos is. I've been wanting to do this song for absolutely years. Hope you're well, a chara.
So this is the song you mentioned last saturday, thanks it’s awesome!
Yes it is, Amigo! Glad you like it. Kiitos paljon.
@@MichaelJSynnott Hei, did not absolutely expect that but… Ole hyvä!
:-D Hah! Nice! I had to use Google Translate to get 'Kiitos paljon'. I speak a handful of languages but Finnish is not one of them.
@@MichaelJSynnottYou should visit Finland, I am sure you would love it here but do it during summer, it gets nippy here during the rest of the seasons.
Well done!
It is awesome!
Thanks for celebrating the work of the great Rutger Gunnarsson. This is an outstanding cover of his great work. 👍😎
Praise indeed! Thanks very much! Incidentally, the cat in your profile pic looks exactly like my late cat, Mira.
@@MichaelJSynnott I have seen a lot of great bass covers of this song and i'll tell you Mike yours is up there with the tops. Great bass tone too! The cat in my profile picture her name is Mimi. Sorry to hear that Mira is no longer with you. I do hope you have another kitty.
@@Mark72672 Well, thank you so much for that comment, Mark - I truly, truly appreciate it. Mimi is beautiful. I brought Mira to be put to sleep at age 16 a few years back and I've not been able to bring myself to get another cat since. Perhaps one of these days. Thanks again, man!
@@MichaelJSynnott Yes I understand. I've been down that road before Brother and I know it's not easy. The last time just 2 years ago with a cat that had been with us 18 years. I too had that same feeling. But I just love them too much that within a month or so I had another one with me. Perhaps one day again for you Mike sooner rather than later! I hope. 🙂
Very good mike.😊😊😊
Damn that rocks!
It’s a privilege to stumble on your channel!
Absolutely fabulous the first one through! Bravo!
God damn you can play dude!
Here we go!
Excellent!
Stole the Eurovision from Käärijä, Damn!
Ah our western neighboring country…
It is tight, you did good man!
This is a challenging song to play!
Flows so effortlessly.
I love Queen so much and You keep it so real!
This is beautiful!
Those immaculate slides, Damn!

Oh, you're going to love the one I'm going to put up tomorrow!

Killer song, killer bass line! Well done!!
Love it Mike :)
Cheers Conor! Un abrazo. 🤗

If Tim Commerford decides to pack it in, they know who they can call!
I'd better get to work on my tats and biceps then! 🤣 Cheers for the comment.
Muy bien 👏👏
Muchísimas gracias a usted, Señor Delgado. 😁👍
So creativity ! A little thing you can do to improve your technique : lean your right thumb on the E string when you play the A,D and G string , it will look more beautiful ! That 's just my own idea ! Thank for your video !
Dude, I do that all the time when it makes sense to do so, for damping purposes, tonal purposes, or to make string transitions easier. You'll actually see me do it several times in this very video! I'm never concerned about how my technique looks - everything is done to service the tone and timing.
Superb , both John's bassline and your work !
YES! YES! Man, earned a sub. I'm a bass player too and love this song! Do "Somebody To Love" next.
Cheers matey! Yep - Somebody To Love is a fantastic song - great suggestion. Appreciate your comment on my ABBA Dancing Queen video too. All my videos are brutally honest, seat-of-the-pants first takes with no video or audio post-production meddling other than compression and EQ, so plenty of rough bits at more than just a cursory glance.
@@MichaelJSynnott that's great. I have to do several takes before I get some what near how it's supposed to be. Lol
@@AstrosElectronicsLab 😁
Interesting interpterion. You missed a few runs and the famous accidental C natural towards the end. Other than that, it had groove, man.
A lot more work involved in that than it sounds from a lay man's perspective. You make it look easy but I'm sure it ain't. Sweet Job Boss :)
Cheers Ned!
Brilliant Mike. Rutger Gunnarsson in my opinion was very important for making the "Abba sound", and is one of my favorite bass player. I think I immediately hear when he is playing, because his special bass lines. Here he is, not long time before he passed away, in case you have not seen it: ua-cam.com/video/B139-IqKcqg/v-deo.html
Thanks Stefan. He was a truly brilliant bassist, combining incredible feel with fantastic melody - playing first and second inversions instead of roots, and sometimes tracking the vocal melody at exactly the right time. I believe he was also ABBA's primary arranger and that he scored the orchestral sections. A musical genius. I have many ABBA songs in my bass repertoire, and they are all a joy to play. The final chorus of Dancing Queen always brings tears to my eyes when I play it, the notes he chose are that brilliant. Thanks again, Stefan.
@@MichaelJSynnott Yes, Rutger played varying with a lot of taste. And the 2-3 guitarists Abba hired also was very good (e.g. Janne Schaffer one of my favorite guitarists). Abba had the money to get the best 😉. As a curiosity I saw Abba playing live in a "folk park" in a small village called "Storebro" (900 habitants) on the countryside in Sweden around 1977 I think. Only the four members with backing tracks. Only about 300 people in the audience. After they got famous. Incredible that it took place. Probably because Bjorn grew up not far away from there. See you in Spain some day or another and play some fun 🙂
Another great job, first take too I bet.
Thanks Skinny. Yeah, they're always brutally honest first takes, warts 'n' all. Plenty of fluffs in this one, and I rushed a couple of the more intricate parts, but I stand by it. It's a decent representation of my live playing ability. Thanks again, Brother! Un abrazo.
Hi Mick , Great Job,,Brings back memories. Are you solo now or in another band ?
Howaya Ned! Great to hear from you. I'm putting another band together at the moment, but we'll not play very often; maybe once a week max. The oul' day job is keeping me very occupied, in a good way. Hope you're well and happy, and thanks for the comments. You've always been a great man for supporting other musicians. 🤘🤘
@@MichaelJSynnott Good Stuff, Keep the Hammer Down Onward and Upwards Boyo :)
Very good work!!
Ah Superb. Loving all these Deacon Classics. Another awesome job my friend. Some time, in the future, any chance of doing “The Invisible Man” or a short “tutorial video” video on how to play it?Keep em coming, Cheers, Niall
Ooh, I hadn't thought of that one, Niall! I've never played it. I'll give it a listen and see if I can figure it out. Thanks a million for all the comments and positive feedback.
Great job Mike.
Absolutely TOP Darts Mike. One of my favorite Deacon Bass Lines. Superb
Love that jazz bass
Yeah, she's a beauty. She's my number two after my Warwick Thumb. She's a Mexican and she plays beautifully. I replaced the pups with active EMG JXs and put a Babicz high mass bridge on her. She's really lovely. Thanks a million!
Tight as! Great tone too.
Thanks man! I did it without a click track - just the raw backing track - so I'm pleased myself with how tight the performance was.
Nice one Mike! 🔥
Superb job. Love Deaco’s Bass lines and they are not straightforward, so clever and impactful, love that outro too. Great performance Mike, keep em coming 🎸👍🏆
I adore this bass line, well done!! ✌️☺️
Thanks a million! It's a fantastic bass line, for sure. Graeme Clark is an incredible bassist and writer. He wrote and recorded this when he was 19! 😮 I truly appreciate you taking the time to comment, Daniel. 🤘🤘
@@MichaelJSynnott Indeed he is incredible, so young but so talented!! ✌️☺️
